Squid guard (and lapel guard in general) can be tough to get out of, much less to pass.
Here are some good techniques to add to your game, so you can work on untangling yourself.
Starting with unwinding, so to speak, is the best first approach:
This is like playing the tape backwards, as you're just undoing what your partner has done. You can use this step to reset and start passing again right away.
The next step is straightforward: you can add a grip break (a "stomp") to the sequence, like this:
Controlling the inside leg can also lead into a very effective side smash pass:
Those same initial grips can be used to set up a really slick pass, too. Preventing the K-guard entry with the pants grip, you can step on your partner's stomach and then sit back. The idea is to use your foot as a frame, to keep your partner from crowding you. From here, you can disconnect and come up on a strong passing position.
